Here is a YouTube playlist of these tracks for continuous listening
TECHNICAL ONSLAUGHT – The Calling [Alibi Records, 1990]
It’s 7pm and you’re eating tuna pasta while watching Masterchef when all of a sudden the screen goes black and flicks to the breaking news of an impending nuclear attack. This track, a Joey Beltram production, pretty much sums up how your stomach feels - twisted and jittery.
SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO – Detroit Is Burning [Djax-Up-Beats, 1991]
Word has it that Detroit - the most run down and uninhabited city in the US is the target for the bomb. If I could choose one label to soundtrack a nuclear attack then it would have to be DJAX.
PLANT43 – GJ 1214B [Cultivated Electronics, 2014]
You decide the only option is to bail from earth and head to Mars. The balance of atmosphere and fear in this track make it perfect for listening to as you watch earth go to shit from your space craft safe-haven.
DON WILLIAMS – Orderly Kaos (摩耶のための曲) [a.r.t.less, 2006]
The main loop in this track is based off the last few minutes of Maurizio’s ‘Domina (Maurizio Mix)’. I love the simplicity that is often found in these dark, dubby techno tracks. A looming sense of mortality echoes throughout.
DECAK – Freekin' Empires [Rotters Golf Club, 2003]
This track has similar dub infused sounds to the one before but is instead backed by a full frontal electro attack. I found this in a live recording of a DJ Stingray set from 2003 which is really worth a listen. Any sense of hope you had will be gone by the end of this.
DEEP RED – Live + Direkt [Primal Breakz, 1998]
This is an eerie breaks tune which packs a proper punch... From the anxiety inducing drone-y sounds to the screachy alarm - this one has all the signature sounds that are likely to be heard after a small amount of enriched uranium falls into the hands of a psycopath.
OBTANE - Tericore [Synewave, 2008]
Back on earth the streets are empty. The sparse soundscape and delayed whispers that echo throughout this song resemble the general feeling in the air. Synewave, a label recently introduced to me by Ryan Pierre, is definetely another go to for your pre nuclear attack drinks.
