Dazion – AKA producer, DJ, live performer and visual artist Cris Kuhlen – has been a man in demand as of late. As a producer, Kuhlen likes to work predominantly with unloved and little known electronic hardware. These hulking beasts form a key part of his computer-free live shows, in which he performs semi-improvised jams full of heavy percussion hits and spooky synthesizer noises.

His love of “goofy” drum machine percussion, kaleidoscopic analogue synthesisers, battered guitar effects pedals, lilting melodies, and humid special effects, all form a part of his exotic and far-sighted musical vision which emanates a sound that is deliciously difficult to pigeonhole.

“For this playlist I’d love to share some intimate footage of both studio and live sessions. Of course it’s cool to show a finished song, but I thought it might be nice to shed a bit of light on how different artists and producers approach this. Some of these videos, I have watched over a thousand times, and it really inspired me to do what I do now. Who knows, it might inspire you too! Enjoy!'"

Bob Rutman Studio Session 4 - Steel Cello Ensemble w/ Dan & Carson

One of 10 beautiful recordings lead by visual artist, composer, musician and instrument builder ‘Bob’ (Robert) Rutman.

I truly stand in awe of artists who combine these elements to enhance any type of composition or performance.

If you asked me where I would like to see myself, musically, in the near future, it would be living in this super wooden/glass architectural building, surrounded by nature, filled with self-made instruments, a workshop, pottery stuff…ok, enough about that. Please enjoy this captivating piece.

Herman van Boeyen Drumsolo

Dutch drummer Herman van Boeyen is probably best known for his work with Herman van Brood (Vitesse) and Time Bandits.

As skilled as he is, I can’t get my head around this sick solo, where he utilises both electronic and acoustic drum elements.

I am not afraid to tell you that I am attempting to make a danceable edit of this track. It’s not going well at all. But if it does, I’ll let you know.

Olena Podluzhnaya performs "Blessing of the Nature"

This piece is called, or better said, literally translated to: ‘Blessing of the Nature’.

Russian shaman performer Olena Podluzhnaya has an impressive vocal technique where she can mimic super sick Soundscapes.

If this doesn’t really impress you, then please proceed to 2:20ish where she plays the mouth harp. Around 2:45 is where she REALLY goes in.

Steve Porcaro Studio Jam

With all my heart, I feel unconditional love for Toto’s Steve Porcaro.

This super talented producer / composer / musician  is responsible for some of the biggest hits you have ever cried to. In this video, you can see the master at work in his own studio, composing great midi - patterned compositions, whilst being off his head with some A-grade cocaine.

If I had to pick my favourite Youtube video of all time, this would be it. What an absolute legend.

Pete Rock sampling Cindy Lauper on MPC

Probably a lot of you know who Pete Rock is, and remember his work with A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr etc.

Being very much at the foundation of a sample based generation and sound, this man can work his way around an MPC like no other.

S.M. Nurse performing ‘Hot Day in Istanbul’

One of my favourite Dutch experimental / wave groups. Performed in popular Amsterdam based clubs as Paradiso and Mazzo. (This clip is actually recorded in Mazzo) They have a self released tape on Top Tape, containing their live performance in Drag - Club Madame Arthur.

Super sick.

Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones on the Fairlight CMI

It’s safe to say that I’ve watched this video probably a million times, or shoved it down everyone’s throat during a nice birthday or night out.

Besides the fact that the Fairlight CMI is Australian built (great job guys) it was and will always be one of the most desired pieces of hardware for any synth nerd or enthusiast. Here you can see the legendary Mr. Hancock and Mr. Jones just having fun with it. And to me, they show a textbook example of how to compose a song. I just lose it around 2:33. Every damn time. (Note: there’s another Fairlight video featuring Peter Gabriel)

Electric Cooking with Legowelt

Legowelt (or Danny Wolfers) needs little to no introduction. Or at least, I don’t think I can type enough words to describe his track record and influence on Dutch electronic music. He has a massive synth collection, and gives a great studio tour, whilst showing bait of his process in making music.
