MY BLOODY VALENTINE - Drive It All Over Me
"Oh, the travel always gets me." Stepping on the gas and hitting the open road with no destination in mind is as cliche as it gets, but it sure paints a pretty picture with this song in mind. A night drive can feel haunting and lonely, so sometimes all you need is a contextually appropriate singalong -- here's exactly that.
MARIBEL - And Back In (feat. Carmen Villain)
As I mentioned above, haunting loneliness can creep into a night drive -- especially through desolate territories. It doesn't have to be sad and scary though. It can be a beautiful thing. Picture yourself cruising through the desert roads with the stars above you, a situation I often find myself in while road tripping here within California. Cosmic, ethereal, and melancholic textures truly elevate the experience. Oslo-based musicians Maribel and Carmen Villain are well suited for this context with their dreamy hallucinogenic productions.
NOTHING - Dig
Nostalgia is an important factor when it comes to listening experiences behind the wheel, especially when darkness provides the freedom and protection to truly free your mind. Let's not dwell on the past though, that's why I've chosen a contemporary band like Nothing -- offering familiar feelings of the past combined with a modern take on shoegaze. Soothing yet intense. Sensory activation. Very crucial elements for a moonlit journey.
PHARAOHS - Ahumbo
This is a band from LA, some real hometown heroes. They make psychedelic music that will take you to that other place inside your mind, only accessible under the right circumstances. This tune in particular is particularly transcendental. It's introspective, hopeful, and a total trip.
PURO INSTINCT - Slivers of You (Secret Circuit Remix)
Another strong cast of LA artists right here, when combined makes for something special. Dream pop remixed by our finest local tropical technician. I guess at this point I'm starting to realize night drives are done best while drenched in reverb and space echo. For nearly 8 pulsating minutes, you can pretend your car is an airplane while the distant city lights on the horizon are actually below you.
MARIA MINERVA - Gloria
Continuing my little streak of highlighting local talent with this one. Now that we're put in a trance from the last few, it's time to come back to earth. You don't wanna start lose focus of the road (it's time for a beat). But of course, let's keep it blissed out and subtle. One of my favorites from Maria and the 100% Silk catalog in general.
SFV ACID - AS IS (Part1)
Time for another beat -- courtesy of another one of our local musicians once again. In this case we don't need words or lyrics. Just something hypnotic as you travel through the night.
SONIC YOUTH - The Sprawl
I'll let the second half of the song do the most of the talking for me here. One of the best parts about night drives is forgetting you were even listening to something, and then you later realize you're in fact still listening to something. Only great records can achieve this phenomenon. If only this was 30 minutes longer!
HYPE WILLIAMS - The Throning
This track, in a way, takes bits and pieces of everything else in this playlist and combines it all into one. The final result is nothing short of perfection. Sweet euphoria -- that's what this theme is all about.
